It’s one of the treasure you can experience once in Capri, one of the most exciting inlets on the island, they called it the Green Grotto.
Its name is due to the reflection of the light on the rocks and on the seabed, a phenomenon which cause the fascinating color of the water inside the cave.
It looks like an enormous liquid emerald…
Believe us, the green color is so intense that you can’t resist to the desire to dive among those waters!
And… if you want you can: unlike in the Blue Grotto, swim is not prohibited here.
The entrance into the Green Grotto requires no particularity, it’s easy accessible.
While swimming through the crystalline water you will feel a great joy at the bottom of the heart.
The cave has two openings and the western one is four meters below sea level, while the maximum height inside the Green Grotto is about seven meters.
The walls are composed of a specific sedimentary rock, the "dolomia", an aggregate of calcium carbonate and magnesium dating back to 190/130 million years ago (they are the oldest rocks in Capri).
Outside the grotto, using a mask, we suggest to explore the seabeds, if you are lucky you may encounter many sea horses.
In ancient times the Green Grotto was known as the "Cave of the Turks" because not infrequently pirates and privateers sought shelter from their enemies here.
You can see the Green Grotto by booking your boat tour around the island (from Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi or Naples). Get ready to live an unparalleled experience!
