You can’t tell you know Sorrento and its peninsula without experiencing a real lemon grove. Sorrento, just like Amalfi, is the homeland of the authentic Italian lemons, the main ingredient of the Limoncello liqueur.
Are you ready to unveil the marvelous beauty of a lemon grove? Follow us in this article and reach the heart of our land.
Let’s start from the beginning: not all the lemons are the same. Did you know it?
The lemons cultivated in Sorrento are different from the lemons you can find in Amalfi for their higher acidity, higher vitamin C content and for a more oval shape.
Watching the amazing frescoes in Pompeii, archaeologists have recognized numerous fruits, including lemons, but the first historical information about lemon cultivation in this area dates back to 1600.
From this period the farmers started to cultivate the lemons with the same methodology that we can observe today, covering the trees with the “pagliarelle” (straws), in order to protect the plants from the cold and wind, but also to delay the ripening of the fruits.
If you wish you can enjoy a complete and engaging “lemon experience”, visiting some of the gardens and tasting a juice or also getting a table in one of our favorite restaurants serving traditional Sorrentine dishes. The main ingredient of the several recipes will be… the lemon, of course!
If you want to walk on the “lemon route”, we can suggest to visit the historic citrus grove “Villanella” in Massa Lubrense. If you’re looking for the best panoramic view, we recommend that of the "Grottelle" of Villa Massa in Meta di Sorrento.
It will be a breathtaking experience, the explosion of colors, the intense scents and the bucolic and orderly atmosphere will make you fall in love with Sorrento.
If you wish to enjoy a Limoncello tasting, we can only recommend the superb Villa Beatrice, her you can also buy some bottles and have a wonderful Limoncello experience!
How about a “tagliatelle with lemon and prawns”? If you like this idea, you have to get your table at the Nettuno Restaurant in Massa Lubrense, where the lemon enhances the freshness of the other ingredients, among which fish stands out.
In the historic center of Sorrento you can find "'O Parrucchiano La Favorita", an ancient and celebrated restaurant, where you can taste excellent traditional recipes in a fairytale atmosphere.
And now, the “grand finale” with a “sweet” ending… don’t leave Sorrento without tasting these two desserts:
• Delizie al limone, characterized by a delicate flavor, is perfect for a summer evening.
• Babà al limoncello, the typical sweet of Neapolitan pastry, but soaked in Limoncello, a real gourmand's dessert!

We visited Sorrento in May and decided to rent a private boating experience through Restart Boat tours. Their service was incredible and very professional. Our Captain, Francesco was amazing and took us to all over the island of Capri and we were able to see all of the best sites. We had free time to eat lunch and explore the city of Anacapri. Highly recommend this outstanding company. Thank you for making our honeymoon special - this was the highlight of the trip.
I visited the Amalfi Coast during a EuroTrip with girlfriends and we added a boat trip from Positano to Capri to our plans and it was the best decision! This boat company provided us with excellent service and Giuseppe and his assistant were very friendly and welcoming. We were offered food and drinks on the boat and given the option to eat lunch in Capri and see multiple grottos, including the beautiful Grotta Azzurra. It was awesome to be able to jump and swim in the ocean while avoiding the crowds on the beach! Highly recommend to include this boat excursion in your stay in the Amalfi Coast!
Restart Boat tours was everything you could want in a private boating experience. Their prompt professional service was top notch. Our Captain, Francesco was amazing and took us to every beautiful spot around Capri. We had free time to eat and shop too. Highly recommend this outstanding company. Thank you!
