Let’s start from the beginning: not all the lemons are the same. Did you know it?
The lemons cultivated in Sorrento are different from the lemons you can find in Amalfi for their higher acidity, higher vitamin C content and for a more oval shape.
Watching the amazing frescoes in Pompeii, archaeologists have recognized numerous fruits, including lemons, but the first historical information about lemon cultivation in this area dates back to 1600.
From this period the farmers started to cultivate the lemons with the same methodology that we can observe today, covering the trees with the “pagliarelle” (straws), in order to protect the plants from the cold and wind, but also to delay the ripening of the fruits.
If you wish you can enjoy a complete and engaging “lemon experience”, visiting some of the gardens and tasting a juice or also getting a table in one of our favorite restaurants serving traditional Sorrentine dishes. The main ingredient of the several recipes will be… the lemon, of course!
