The Path of Gods (or Sentiero degli Dei in Italian) is a clifftop hike above the Amalfi Coast. It was named in this way by Giustino Fortunato in the 19th century, according to the Odyssey and to the legendary roots of this land, but it’s commonly known that this trail is one of the best in the world for its breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Amalfi Coast.
The Path of Gods averages at about 1640 feet (500 m) above sea level, it’s fairly uneven and rocky, so remember to wear good sporty shoes, taking sunscreen, and plenty of water.
You can decide for a guided tour as for a self-guided: if you are an experienced hiker you will find it easy and if you are fit you’ll be fine. But remember: if you wish to avoid the crowd, wake up early, to be at the starting point at 7,30 am. You’ll be alone in the land of Gods, an authentic quintessential experience.
This path is a link between two hilltop towns: Agerola and Nocelle, a fraction of Positano. The usual beginning is in Bomerano (fraction of Agerola) and the main section is about 4 miles (6,5 km).
You can get to Bomerano by using the many “Sita” buses departing from Amalfi. But remember to ask the driver to let you off at the Bomerano stop.
This adventure allows around four hours (if you want to go to Nocelle and back), or two (if you prefer a single way route).
From the start the route is marked with white and red signs, also showing a “02” written on them. Start walking, breathe the pure air and relax watching the beautiful countryside, until you arrive at a fountain: here you have to take the road on your right.
From this point you will leave behind the fabulous hills dotted with many sheep and goats to meet the typical, delightful Mediterranean landscape, characterized by arbutus, heather, rosemary and oaks. The hike becomes more difficult (but just a bit), with a series of ascents and descents, until reaching Nocelle.
You will surely recognize you’re on the right path: the awe-including views will leave you breathless. And, to be honest, it would be very difficult to get lost or deviate from the correct path as there aren’t many other routes you can take.
Of course, but consider that you will have a pleasant long walk, with warm (hot in summer) weather. So we believe that the minimum age to live this experience is 10 years old.
At the end of the Path of Gods, if you’re hot, you can descend a further 300 steps to the Arienzo beach, dive and swim in the pristine Caribbean water, get an ice cream and then walk straight on to the center of Positano (it’s about 1 km far). The path is very safe and you will feel fine even if you are afraid of heights.
Spring and Autumn are the best times to walk on this path, because the weather is still nice and sunny but also not too uncomfortable. You will also have this incredible “look up into the heavens” almost alone, avoiding the summer crowds.
It will be one of the best hike you will enjoy in your life. The only tough part will be not stopping every five minutes to gape at the astonishing views. How can we describe it… well, it’s like the outstanding pictures you can find online, but you’re in the photo!
