What is Pompeii?
Pompeii was a Roman city (conquered by the Romans in 80 B.C.) and its full name was Colonia Veneria Cornelia Pompeii. Pompeii was a holiday destination for the wealthiest Romans, who had their villas here. Here they spent the hottest months of summer.
Pompeii looked like all Roman towns: there was a forum where all public activities took place, there were temples dedicated to the deities (such as Venus, Jupiter, Apollo) and an aqueduct brought water to the city, to use it in fountains and public baths. You will be amazed to see how the Romans lived: our society doesn't seem that far from them: in Pompeii, there were taverns, wine shops, spas, theaters, markets, and much more. Are you ready to walk on its streets?
The Pompeii eruption
In 79 BC the volcano Vesuvius erupted covering the entire city with ash and rocks, an event that killed practically all the inhabitants of Pompeii and Herculaneum, about 2000 people.
The city was excavated from 1748 to the present day.
Archaeologists had to dig up to 5 m underground to find the roads of Pompeii. Today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
Pompeii with kids, what not to do
If you visit Pompeii with the right spirit, it can turn into a fantastic playground for children, just involve them directly in a journey through magnificent time. However, there are some things you absolutely shouldn't do:
• if you want to take a guided tour, book it in advance by names you know. Pompei Holiday organizes excellent guided tours. Avoid taking a guide at the gate! Anyway, you will hardly be able to visit all of Pompeii.
• One of the stops on every tour is represented by the brothels. If you don't want to explain to your children very detailed frescoes, skip them.
• Don't go at noon! The heat risks turning everything into a sort of Odyssey. Visit Pompeii early in the morning or after 4 pm
• Think ahead about where you will have lunch. As is often the case, you may not find what you want nearby
• Do not go to visit Pompeii in sandals, wear comfortable closed-toe shoes!
Contact us and we will help you plan your trip. You could choose to experience a boat tour of one day or more, between Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and Pompeii! You and your children, for an amazing family vacation!
