Limoncello is as good as simple, its recipe requires only four ingredients: lemon peels, grain alcohol, sugar, and water.

We don’t know when the first Limoncello was produced, but we are sure that the Romans cultivated lemons. According to some researchers and historians, lemon liquor could be derived from a group of liqueurs called “rosoli”, characteristics of the traditions of the Italian monks. 

The word “Limoncello” was registered for the first time in 1988.

The production process begins with fresh lemon peels, while the pulp is used for other lemon-based production (have you ever heard about Sal de Riso pastry shop? You absolutely should try their “Delizia al Limone”).

Just like every restaurant you can go will offer its homemade Limoncello at the end of the dinner (usually without any added cost), to “complete” the end of the meal, any producer has its ancient family recipe.

You could think that this is a “tourist trap”, while it’s an excellent family-run business. They enhance their traditional method to produce an incredibly fresh and genuine liqueur.

• La valle dei Mulini - Their production follows an ancient family recipe handed down from two centuries. They use only Organic-certified Amalfi Coast Lemons they grow on their own (note that Lemons that grown in specific regions of Capri and Amalfi Coast fall under the legal protection afforded by an IGP - Indicazione Geografica Tipica, an expression which stays for “protected geographic area”).

• Meletti Limoncello - It’s the first choice for many Italians and also for magazines like liquor.com. As you can imagine, this Limoncello is for sure one of the best expressions ever of the lemon-based products, because it shows a perfect balance between tart, sweet and fresh. An authentic citrus elixir that you can find online, unfortunately, the company is based in Ascoli Piceno, 5 hours far by car from Amalfi.
